Lecture by Prof. Simms “Britain and Europe: the clash of two systems of order then and now”

„Britain and Europe. The clash of two ordering systems then and now“

The lecture will take place on Monday 27 March 2023 at 11:00 in room 301 of the main building of the Faculty of Arts.

This lecture will show how for hundreds of years, England and the United Kingdom was an ordering force in Europe. After 1973, when the UK joined  the EEC, it became a co-ordering power on the continent. The Brexit vote in 2016 therefore threw up the question: what would the UK“s role in the rest of Europe now be, might it even be dominated by the EU? The events of the past few years have given different answers to these questions, which the cture will illuminate from both the historical and contemporary angles.
