"The Country Looming above All"? Great Britain as Seen by Czechoslovak Architects between Two World Wars

Libor Tomáš
This study deals with a perspective of selected Czechoslovak architects on Great Britain between two world wars. Considering unexplored state of this topic, it was necessary to conceive it as a marking of possible themes for further exploration. The main "British" topics for Czechoslovak architects were the garden cities, colonies of family houses and the special British town planning. Britain was often considered as a good example and a source of inspiration. Common awareness of Britain was pretty low among architects and this situation improved during the late 1920s and the beginning of the 1930s. In the 1930s, there were only a few mentions of Britain because this country didn't offer answers to the modern architectural questions any more.
