Bachelor’s programme History

General information and course structure

The bachelor’s programme History forms a part of the study programme Historical Sciences. History as a discipline belongs to the oldest fields of study taught at Charles University in Prague. If we concentrate only on its modern tradition, history has been taught since 1741 (or 1774 more precisely). Nowadays, the history courses that are taught at Charles University in Prague represent a combination of modern Czech sciences of the early 19th century and of the newest developments in the field. They also reflect the developments of the study of history in Europe and in the U.S.

Charles University is known for the broad chronological sweep of its courses. Students are given the opportunity to study Czech and world history from the Early Middle Ages to the present day. The main aim of the programme is to explain and interpret world and Czech general, economic and social history – not separately but in a broader context. Moreover, it must be said, Czech history does not solely concentrate on the national viewpoint of history. It is more understood as the history of the society of the Czech lands.

The programme also puts great emphasis on a good understanding of historical theories and methods. Lecturers at Charles University are erudite in the field of historical methods and methodologies that are used in contemporary Czech sciences. Therefore, students are expected to familiarize themselves with the methods, methodologies and theoretical approaches of the discipline in concern.

The bachelor’s programme History is based on cooperation of three specialized history departments – i.e. the Institute of World History, the Institute of Czech History and the Institute of Economic and Social History (founded in 1990). In addition, other research and pedagogical departments and institutes of the Faculty of Arts take part in the lecturing. It is possible to mention for example the Department of Auxiliary Historical Sciences and Archive Studies, the Institute of Prehistoric Times Studies, the Institute of Greek and Latin Studies, the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, the Language Centre of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague.
